One-Handed Cooking Support and Meal Prep in the Bay Area

Cooking with one hand — whether due to stroke, amputation, nerve damage, brachial plexus injury, or congenital limb difference — requires a genuinely different approach to the kitchen. The standard cooking setup assumes two hands working in coordination, and much of the technique taught in any conventional kitchen class reflects that assumption. Well Prepped Life works with one-handed adults in the Bay Area in two ways: we provide weekly in-home meal prep so you have a full week of professionally cooked meals without the physical demands, and we offer adaptive cooking instruction focused specifically on one-handed technique — the equipment, the setups, and the methods that make real cooking possible with one arm.

In-Home Meal Prep for One-Handed Adults

For days, weeks, or permanently — when cooking from scratch is too demanding, a professional chef comes to your Bay Area home and prepares a week of meals in your kitchen. Seven to ten complete dishes are cooked, portioned, labeled, and organized in your refrigerator and freezer in a single session. Meals are built around your dietary needs and food preferences. The kitchen is cleaned before we leave. This is the most direct solution when the goal is consistent, nutritious, home-cooked food without spending hours working around a kitchen that was not designed for you.

Adaptive One-Handed Cooking Instruction

For clients who want to cook more independently with one hand, we offer practical instruction built around your specific situation. Key techniques and tools for one-handed cooking include suction-cup cutting boards and dycem mats that stabilize food without a second hand, rocker knives and mezzalunas that require only downward pressure, one-handed can openers and jar openers, countertop appliances that eliminate the need to handle heavy pots, and methods for tasks like cracking eggs, peeling vegetables, and opening packaging one-handed. We teach these in your own kitchen with your actual equipment and layout in mind.

Who We Work With

We work with stroke survivors who have hemiplegia or hemiparesis affecting one arm, adults with amputations at any level of the upper limb, those with brachial plexus injuries, adults with congenital limb difference who are revisiting their approach to cooking, and seniors who have lost significant function in one hand due to arthritis, nerve damage, or injury. Each situation is different. The techniques that work for someone with full use of a dominant hand but no non-dominant hand are different from what works for someone with a transradial amputation using a prosthesis, and we treat them accordingly.

Kitchen Assessment

As part of working with one-handed clients, we often recommend a kitchen assessment that identifies specific barriers in your current setup. Small changes — where you store frequently used items, what cutting board you use, how your prep area is arranged — can significantly reduce the physical difficulty of cooking one-handed. We provide specific, actionable recommendations based on your kitchen layout, your dominant hand, and your cooking goals.
